The Center for Disease Control and Prevention will investigate the death of a man from Nebraska after local health officials listed the Covid-19 vaccine as one of several causes of death, the Department of Health and Human Services in Nebraska said late Thursday.
The man, a long-term care provider in his late forties with various illnesses and conditions, died on January 17 between one and two weeks after receiving his first dose of Covid-19 vaccine.
The CDC and FDA received 1,170 deaths among individuals in the U.S. who received a Covid vaccine – 0.003% of those vaccinated – between December 14 and February 7. During this time, more than 41 million doses of Pfizer or Moderna’s Covid- According to the CDC, 19 vaccines were administered across the country.
“Usually COVID-19 deaths from vaccines can be attributed to anaphylaxis and can occur within a relatively short period of time after the vaccine has been administered, which is why monitoring is done,” said Dr. Gary Anthone, chief medical officer of Nebraska, said.
“While I can not speculate on this matter, it is more likely due to other underlying factors when individuals die days or weeks after the vaccine is administered,” Anthone said.
The death occurred in the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, a national vaccine safety monitoring program run by CDC and the Food and Drug Administration. All adverse events or deaths must be reported to the system whenever it occurs after vaccination.
“This process enables the CDC and FDA to closely monitor adverse events and evaluate them for ongoing safety evaluations,” the health department said in a statement.
The CDC has reported no patterns in cause of death indicating safety issues with the vaccines.
People with high-risk conditions should consult their medical providers regarding vaccination, Anthone said.
