CD Project Ransomware Attack Disrupts ‘Cyberpunk’ Updates

A recent Bloomberg report says that CD project SA’s game developer has been forced to delay a promised update of its heavily criticized blockbuster game. Cyberpunk 2077and claims that a recent attack on ransomware led hackers to steal the game’s source code and shut down the company’s systems.

Bloomberg reports that CD Projekt SA announced on Wednesday that it will delay a new update for its blockbuster game Cyberpunk 2077and claims that the slow progress with the game was due to a massive security breach.

Bloomberg claims the publisher did not notice that most of the company’s staff had been locked out of their workstations for the past two weeks due to a ransom attack. Bloomberg writes:

The strike is the result of a ransomware attack launched on February 9. The scale of the disruption, which has not been reported before, is a major setback for CD Project’s effort to save a game that urgently needs repair.
CD Project said it refuses to pay a ransom to hackers. As a result, employees remain unable to log in to the company’s virtual private network, making it impossible to access the systems and tools needed to do most of their work, the people said. anonymity requested because they are not authorized to speak in public.
Although some CD Project employees work from headquarters in Warsaw, the majority are at home due to the coronavirus pandemic. CD Projekt did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Bloomberg notes that the hack had a major impact on employees. Hackers may have gained access to the personal information of the employees, including Polish identification numbers and passport details, which led to the employees being instructed to freeze their accounts and report the security breach to the relevant authorities.
