Carrie and Mike welcomed their first son in 2015, but throughout 2017 and 2018, the American Idol star suffered three miscarriages when she tried to conceive again.

In a 2018 interview with CBS News, she admitted that the family tragedies were the inspiration for her single Cry Pretty in 2018 on the album of the same name.

‘Throughout the process [of miscarrying]you know, I write, and literally, just after I found out I was going to lose a baby, I would have had a writing session, like ‘Let’s go. You know, I can ‘t just sit and think about this. Like: I want to work, I want to do it, ‘she recalls.

She describes the experience of songwriting as ‘therapeutic’.
