Capitol police officer who died shortly after riot for Trump will lie in honor

Capitol police officer Brian Sicknick, who died in early January from injuries sustained while responding to the siege by a pro-Trump crowd on the Capitol, will appear in U.S. Capitol Rotunda, House President Nancy Pelosi (D-California) and honor lies. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (DN.Y.) announced Friday night.

Why it matters: According to the architect of the Capitol, the honor is only a tribute to private citizens who rendered an excellent service to the country.

What they say: “The US Congress is united in sadness, gratitude and solemn appreciation for the service of Officer Brian Sicknick,” Pelosi and Schumer wrote in a statement.

  • “The heroism of Officer Sicknick and the Capitol police during the violent uprising against our Capitol has helped save lives, defend the temple of our democracy, and ensure that Congress is not diverted from our duty to the Constitution.”
  • “May this ceremony and the knowledge with which so many mourn with them be a comfort to the family of Officer Sicknick during this sad time.”
