Capitol police officer dies after riot

Brian D. Sicknick, a Capitol police officer who participated in defending the Capitol during a mob attack, was killed Thursday night, according to U.S. Capitol police.

“The entire USCP department expresses its deepest sympathy with Officer Sicknick’s family and friends for their loss and deplores the loss of a friend and colleague,” a USCP spokesman said.

Sicknick’s death was reported early in the evening, prompting remarks of sympathy from members of Congress. He died of his wounds around 9:30 p.m.

The death of the officer brings the death toll from Wednesday’s riot to five. The other four deaths were among the rioters, including one woman who shot police in the Capitol as she tried to enter the living room, and three others who died from unrelated health emergencies, including one heart attack.

“This tragic loss should remind us all of the bravery of the law enforcers who protected us, our colleagues, the Congress staff, the press corps and other essential workers yesterday,” the Home Remuneration Committee chairperson said. More than 50 officers were injured and 15 were taken to hospital against supporters of President Trump, which violated the Capitol in an attempt to prevent Congress from declaring the president-elect Joe Biden‘s election.

Congress ratified the election overnight despite objections from some Republicans.

The riot, which Trump has cracked down on, has led to numerous calls for Vice President Pence to call for the 25th amendment along with a majority of the cabinet to deprive Trump in the last 13 days of his presidency. Democrats also discussed accusing Trump a second time of removing him for his role in inciting the riot.

Trump released a video on Thursday night acknowledging that a new government would take power on January 20 and deny the violent protesters, for whom he expressed love and admiration on Wednesday.

Capitol police chief Steven Sund said earlier in the evening that he would resign in accordance with the speaker of the House. Nancy Pelosi‘s (D-Calif.) claim, just like the arms sergeant and arms sergeant.

The three positions, along with the Architect of the Capitol, consist of the supervisory board for the Capitol Police.
