Capitol Police: 6 officers suspended for alleged roles in riot

“Acting Chief Yogananda Pittman has instructed that any member of her department whose conduct does not comply with the department’s rules of conduct will receive appropriate discipline,” department spokeswoman John Stolnis told CNN.

CNN reported in January that the USCP had placed at least ten officers under investigation, and two others had been suspended.

One of the suspended officers took a selfie with someone who was part of the mob that passed the Capitol, according to Rep. Tim Ryan, a Democrat from Ohio. Another wore a Make America Great Again hat and began leading people around the building, Ryan said.

Last month, Pittman said the department “has been actively reviewing video and other open source material from some USCP officials and officials who appear to be in violation of the department’s regulations and policies.”

The suspensions and investigations come at a time of internal unrest at the department, as officers are still struggling with the uprising that led to the death of Officer Brian Sicknick. Members of the Capitol Police issued a no-confidence motion in the top leaders of the force earlier this month.
At least seven officers in five other departments across the country have undergone internal investigations as their presence in Washington comes to light during the assault on social media or other means.

One officer in New York, one in Philadelphia, two in Seattle, two in Virginia and one in Texas are being investigated by their departments for possible violations of rules. In addition, some departments were contacted by the FBI as part of their criminal investigation into the overthrow of the Capitol.

The number could grow as investigators and the public search through social media and submit allegations that officers may have been involved in the siege.
