The design, of course, is not without peculiarities. One is that the camera’s hot shoe (the component marked “P” in the top diagram) would become unusable in the selfie orientation of the device. For a camera built around vlogging, this would not be ideal; most external microphones are attached to a camera by a hot shoe. Canon’s documentation also does not mention any membrane support, which means that any stabilization must be provided by a potential body mechanism and through the lens. The use of Canon’s full frame glass would also compromise. RF lenses are not the lightest (or cheapest) you can buy, and the resulting camera will probably not be in your pocket.

As with all patents, this one may not lead to a product you can buy. But, like Canon News points out that the company has filed five separate patents related to this design, indicating that it is at least serious about the idea.
