Canceled BioWare project Revolver in concept art • Eurogamer.net

Previously unseen concept art from the canceled BioWare project Revolver was posted online by artist Matt Rhodes.

Revolver, a spiritual successor to Jade Empire, was never officially announced. Bits and bits about it have surfaced over the years before BioWare finally went into detail in its recent book for its 25th anniversary.

The project is designed in the near future to spread BioWare’s brand story and character-driven efforts across a more open world and action-packed environment. Huh, sounds familiar.

“Began his life as a sequel to Jade Empire, and Revolver has evolved and changed course many times through its development,” Rhodes wrote. “It was recently unveiled in more detail in the book ‘Bioware: Stories and Secrets from 25 Years of Game Development.’ “

In the development of PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 around 2005 to 2008, Revolver planned to make the BioWare formula work in a sandbox environment that allows you to park and explore at will. Characters and quests are designed to be encountered in a non-linear story.

As the scope of the project became clear, BioWare enlisted the help of Big Sandwich Games, a studio staffed by former Rockstar Vancouver staff, to work on the open world elements of the game. But eventually the project was quietly canceled, and BioWare focused its efforts on the impending release of Dragon Age: Origins and, a year later, Mass Effect 2.

Here are some more artwork – and there’s more at Rhodes’s Instagram and ArtStation:
