Cam Newton’s First Career in TD Receives New England Patriots with New York Jets

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. The New England Patriots played the strings against the New York Jets on Sunday, so why not empty their pocket tricks?

Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels scored 14-7 late in the third quarter on the Jets’ 19-year-old line. Quarterback Cam Newton handed Sony Michel out of the gun as Michel came from right to left. At the same time, receiver Jakobi Meyers was on the move, from left to right and ready for Michel’s laterals.

The Jets aggressively chased the ball and forgot about Newton, who released on the right. This enabled Meyers to put his feet at the 30-yard line and deliver a gentle, archery pass to Newton on the 8-yard line.

Newton basically stepped into the end zone from there.

Meyers, of course, spent a quarter of an hour at Arabia Mountain High School in Georgia and dressed in that position in the NC state before switching to receiver as a freshman. He is 2-for-2 for 43 yards who has passed this season, and although he has yet to get a pass, he has thrown for two.

According to the NFL Next Gen Stats, Meyers ‘pass rate was 31.3 yards, as he has two of the Patriots’ four longest passing games this season.

For Newton, this is the first time in his career. When he came in on Sunday, he received two careers for 43 yards. He had one in Tampa Bay on December 4, 2011 and he added a 16-year-old this season.

It is also the first reception received by a Patriots fullback in team history.
