A 73-year-old man from California who was snorkeling off the coast of Maui was attacked by an 8-foot-long shark on Friday.
The man was about 40 feet from shore when he cut to his calf.
The Maui County Fire Department responded to Kaanapali Beach at about 7:45 a.m. local time after reports of an apparent shark attack near the Westin Kāʻanapali Ocean Resort.

“When staff arrived there, they determined that the victim had reached the shore and received first aid from the staff at the KOR,” the fire department wrote in a Friday post on Facebook.
The Honolulu Star Adviser reported Friday that the man was taken to Maui Memorial Hospital in good condition.
According to the Department of Land and Natural Resources in Hawaii, there were no other snorkelers or swimmers in the immediate area and the man called 911 on his own.
After the meeting, officers from their Department of Conservation and Resources and Water Resources posted shark warning signs in the area and patrolled the beach on foot and by off-road vehicle to warn people.
Beachgoers were advised to stay out of the water until a clear statement was issued.
According to Maui Now, ocean and weather conditions were calm at the time of the report following extreme gusts that tore through the Hawaiian Islands earlier last week.
