California health officials are urging COVID-19 vaccine providers to stop using a series of Moderna shots after a handful of people vaccinated at the same site had allergic reactions.
Less than ten people reported reactions after receiving doses at a vaccination center in San Diego last week, according to FOX5 San Diego.
‘Everyone seems to be experiencing a severe allergic reaction during the standard observation period – a kind of adverse event that, according to the CDC, some people experienced while receiving a COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccine switched to a different amount of Moderna vaccine after it closed for several hours, ‘said the California Department of Public Health.
The mass vaccination site at Petco Park, home of the Padres, opened on Jan. 11 to deliver vaccinations to health workers on the state’s priority list, the station reported.
Nearly a third of a million doses from the Moderna group were sent to 286 other providers in the Golden State, without any other news about adverse reactions.
Yet officials say it is better to be safe than to be sorry.
“Out of extreme caution and also the extremely limited supply of vaccine, we recommend that suppliers use other available vaccine supplies,” the news release read.
Officials noted that there is some risk to any vaccine or medical procedure, and that it is highly unlikely that anyone will react negatively.
Modern, the CDC and the FDA are all reviewing the bundle and hope to find out more this week. According to the FOX5, replacement doses are not immediately available.
Federal officials had earlier noted that some participants in the vaccine trials that had cosmetic face fillers had side effects.
