According to reports, there is a struggle across California across the country to meet COVID-19 vaccine requirements.
Several vaccines have been seen over the past few weeks, including Los Angeles County. According to the LA Times, some people canceled their appointments for the first shot due to issues.
“The supply of vaccine, we acknowledge that this will be our rate-limiting step,” said Dr. Mark Ghaly, secretary of health and human services in California, said Tuesday. “We are always hoping for more. We will continue to work with the federal government to strive for more, but that will be one of our biggest challenges.”

California officials maintain that the state is on track with its distribution program, even though they acknowledge that the state has a deficit.
“California will reach four million vaccinations on Friday, the most by more than one million in any state,” COVID-19, the vaccine’s senior communications adviser, Darrel Ng, told Fox News. on behalf of the government of Govin Newsom. “The state alone administered 1 million vaccines in the past week, more than the 40 states each ever administered. According to Bloomberg tracker data (to hopefully compare apples to apples), California produces 50% more daily vaccines than the nearest state (Texas), and Texas is only 33% smaller than California. ‘
“The biggest factor in countries that do not have vaccines is the lack of vaccine in the country,” Ng added. “This is not a criticism of any party, but the reality of every province, state and country.”

California initially followed a plan as outlined by federal health experts, with preference given to residents of nursing homes and health care workers, but saw it lag behind states such as South Dakota, West Virginia, Texas and Florida.
California has administered about 3.45 million injections – the most of any state in the country – but in recent weeks it has been the lowest per capita vaccinated population.
California has a population of approximately 39.5 million. Not the entire population of the state is eligible for the vaccine, but even the smaller population has seen only about 7% of the first doses and only 1.6% of the second doses, according to The New York Times.

San Diego County had to limit itself to 10,000 doses per day, which equates to half of what the country can do, reports the Times of San Diego.
“The problem we have now is that our efforts have far exceeded the supply of vaccines,” San Diego Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said. “If the stock increases, we are ready and we can take off quickly.”
Fletcher claims that by mid-February, the province could administer 30,000 doses a day, but that the supply was not there.

Fresno County was particularly hard hit, and health officials said according to ABC 30 that they had to “interrupt” first-dose clinics due to a lack of vaccines in the country.
“Over the next two weeks, we’ll be doing two-dose clinics at the fair, and also the Sierra Pacific Ortho site,” said Joe Prado, manager of the Fresno County Public Health Division. “There are currently not many extra clinics for the first dose we can do.”
Second doses will be administered via drive-thrus where possible, mostly in frontline workers.
Prado said the country can no longer open clinics until they get more supplies.

While California administered 4 million vaccines by Friday, the state has the largest population of any state. Texas on Thursday claimed to have administered nearly 3 million vaccines, which is 75% of California’s production, with about 66% of the population.
As the Ng noted, the use of the Bloomberg tracker lagged behind in per capita distribution: California administered 10.08 vaccinations per 100, while New York administered 10.92 per 100, Virginia 11.12 per 100, New Mexico 14.05 per 100 and North Dakota 15.38. per 100, according to data. Texas is just slightly behind California with 9.68 per 100.

“The supply crisis is creating this huge unfulfilled demand, which is creating chaos,” Andrew Noymer, associate professor of public health, told UC Irvine. “There are only low and low logistics problems we have today that we did not have in previous vaccinations.”
Newsom did not receive much, if any, high criticism of the rollout, possibly because California’s rollout plan is being handled at the provincial level. Newsom, however, was the target for a recall effort after continued criticism over his handling of the pandemic in his state.
The revocation petition reached 1.4 million signatures, with only 1.5 million needed to start the revocation and start an election.
