A man suspected of murdering his ex-girlfriend last week in front of their 3-year-old daughter in California killed himself in Texas when authorities were closing in, investigators said Saturday.
The 46-year-old Herbert Nixon Flores shot himself with a handgun after realizing that police cars were chasing him while driving in the direction of Dallas, Irving police said in a statement.
Irving police worked with the FBI’s Fugitive Task Force in Los Angeles to track down Flores, who was reportedly visiting family in the city.

On Wednesday, the Los Angeles police station released surveillance video showing Flores killing his ex-girlfriend, 35-year-old Karen Ruiz, in Pacoima.

The video shows Flores pulling up in a driveway behind Ruiz, leaving the vehicle and chasing the screaming woman. He fired several shots from a semi-automatic pistol at Ruiz, who is outside the camera, before running back to the car, police said. A child can hear screaming.
Officers responded to the scene around 9:35 a.m. and found that Ruiz was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Flores died from a single self-inflicted gunshot wound when police closed him in, investigators said.

Investigators located Flores in Arlington, Texas, where he got into a vehicle and drove to Dallas, police said. Dallas ‘air and ground units helped monitor Flores’ movements until officers could arrive.
Investigators said Flores realized he was being chased and abandoned his vehicle. He walked on foot until he saw marked police cars pulling in. Flores then killed himself with one shot from a pistol.
