California earthquake reported north of Monterey area

According to reports, an earthquake initially struck with a magnitude of 4.5.

The quake was felt in much of the San Francisco Bay Area, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

The epicenter was reported near the U.S. Geological Survey, located about 30 miles (30 kilometers) northeast of Monterey.

No tsunami was expected to be the result of the quake, the National Weather Service wrote on Twitter.

Injuries or major structural damage due to the earthquake were not immediately known.

The Mercury News reported the quake as a 4.2 magnitude earthquake, slightly less powerful than a 4.3 magnitude earthquake struck in the same region on January 2nd. The two earthquakes were the strongest in California in 2021, reporter Robert Salonga tweeted.

Social media users in San Francisco reported being rattled by the quake, which occurred at about 8 p.m. local time. (San Francisco is about 156 km north of Aromas.)
