California Democratic Representative Adam Schiff Appeals Gavin Newsom Government Silently for AG Vacancy: Report

Rep. Adam Schiff, D-California, may want to vacate his congressional seat in favor of a state-level post, according to a new report.

Schiff is reportedly working behind the scenes to persuade the California government, Gavin Newsom, to appoint him as the next Golden State Attorney General, Axios reported Tuesday night, citing sources familiar with the situation.

The seat will soon open when the current incumbent and President Biden’s nominated candidate for Secretary of Health and Human Services, Xavier Becerra, is confirmed. It was once held by Vice President Kamala Harris before her election to the U.S. Senate.

REP. ADAM SCHIFF SS TRUMP MUST GO, BACK SECOND INVESTMENT

The move would mean a major shift from Schiff, who is currently the influential chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, who saw his national profile rise during the Russian investigation and then the first indictment of former President Donald Trump. But it will also allow him more time in his homeland ahead of 87-year-old Democratic California Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s possible retirement at the end of her 2025 term.

Schiff’s district is reliably Democratic, and the party will continue to have a majority in the House of Representatives until his replacement is elected – even if it is now.

Schiff has represented California’s 28th District for nearly 20 years. As a former federal prosecutor who graduated from Harvard Law School, he has experience that would seemingly qualify him to head the Attorney General’s office – although critics have accused him of bias.

His office could not be immediately reached for comment.

It is unclear who will hold Schiff in the Intel committee. California Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell, another ally of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, remains on the committee – despite his inexplicable ties to a suspected Chinese spy named Fang Fang.

Newsom, in turn, has a low point in its approval ratings – an attempt to recall that he was removed from office and that weakened, and a worse coronavirus outbreak.
