Quick thoughts on an 80-73 loss of double overtime in Wisconsin:
How it happened: It looked like Indiana would run out of the Kohl center in the first half for eight minutes on Thursday night. After the Hoosiers were 11:23 ahead on a Jerome Hunter three-point lead with 11:23 left in the half, the Badgers ripped off the run 20-7 to take a 3:04 lead 29-18. Indiana, desperate for offense, received an unexpected boost to close out the half strongly. The rookie, Anthony Leal, used a few 3-points to pull the Hoosiers inside 29-24 at halftime at halftime. Despite scoring just 0.78 points per possession and a turnover percentage of 23, Indiana hung on tight because it defended Wisconsin well. The Badgers shot just 12-of-27 before halftime, scoring just 0.94 points per possession.
The end of the first half sparked a strong offensive performance in the second half. The Hoosiers found Trayce Jackson-Davis early and regularly and the second big man went to work. Wisconsin looked visibly frustrated at times, trying to defend him and with the score of 5:55, Indiana led 56-50. The Hoosiers found little resistance on either drift lanes or at the edge, leading the night to 44 points in the paint. After a 7-0 run in Wisconsin, the Badgers gave the lead at 57-56, Rob Phinisee responded with a left-wing 3-point lead to give IU a 59-57 cushion with 1:27 to play. Wisconsin responded with D’Mitrik Trice with some free throws to level it at 59 before Jerome Hunter responded with a dunk to set the IU back with 61.89 with 37.8 seconds to play. Trice responds with a hard shot in the lane and gives IU the chance to get the final possession. Jackson-Davis had a pretty good look at the edge and could not finish, sending the game to overtime.
The overtime began with a three-pointer by Leal, who answered Wisconsin with a Brad Davison three-pointer. Neither team will score again until a Hunter plays 1:50. Wisconsin transferred it into subsequent possession, but Hunter pulled a questionable 3-pointer out of a timeout. Trice responded with a 3-point lead with just 1:02 to play to give Wisconsin a 67-66 cushion. Durham missed a jumper with the shot clock declining in the next possession, but Indiana forced a power play and Durham then hit a layout and played a foul for a three-point game with 26.4 seconds to lead 69-67. Trice responds with a jump shot with 11.1 seconds to play. Indiana called a few time-outs but did not get a chance when Davison tied Durham. Davison then missed a runner at the buzzer to set up a second overtime.
Indiana’s inability to complete the game with regulation and overtime was costly. Tyler Wahl hit some 3-pointers to give Wisconsin a 77-70 lead, which put the game out of reach.
Outstanding: Jackson-Davis was great in 49 minutes and finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Leal also had a breakout game with nine points in 35 minutes.
Striking statistics: Indiana was dropped by 10 points on the free throw line and with a 13-7 lead on points from turnover.
