Quick thoughts on an 81-69 loss to Purdue:
How it happened: Indiana’s defense offered little resistance during the first ten minutes in Assembly Hall. The Boilermakers shot at strength of a hot perimeter with a 29-17 lead with the score 9:27 of the first half. An angry Archie Miller, surprised at the performance of his team, asked for a time-out. Whatever was said by Miller in the timeout had an impact. The Boilermakers scored just two points in the next 7:08 when Indiana drew two races in a Race Thompson race. However, the end of the half was a disaster for the Hoosiers. After the IU was 33-31 at two, Purdue sent off seven straight points to stretch the lead to nine. Indiana responded with a three-pointer by Jerome Hunter and an imposition by Armaan Franklin just before halftime expired. The Hoosiers entered the locker room with only four and were happy after a disastrous start.
Indiana kept matters close for the first seven minutes of the second half and played 50-49 inside a poor Franklin jumper inside one with 13:12 left. But the offense splashed just as Purdue started getting Trevion Williams in the post. By the media break of less than eight, Williams was up to 10 second-half points and the Boilermakers led 64-54. But even though Purdue’s offense was declining in the last seven minutes, Indiana’s offense was still inappropriate. Archie Miller took a time lapse of 67-56 with 5:22 and his team amid a field drought of more than five minutes. The Hoosiers would not come closer than six the rest of the way, as Indiana dropped to Purdue for the eighth consecutive time. Archie Miller’s record against the Boilermakers now stands at 0-6 with a 0-4 point in the Assembly Hall.
Outstanding: Jackson-Davis finishes with 25 points but plays only nine minutes in the first half due to foul problems. The second year was 9-out-16 from the field and only 7-out-14 from the free-throw line.
Striking statistics: Indiana shot it poorly from the perimeter and the free throw line. The Hoosiers were 3-out-18 on tries (16.7 percent) and 16-out-29 from the free-throw line (55.2 percent).
