By The Buzzer: Purdue 67, Indiana 58 – Inside the Hall

Quick thoughts on a 67-58 loss at Purdue:

How it happened: Saturday’s game in West Lafayette went just as many expected. Indiana, who lost the game by four points, continued its malaise late in the season. And although Purdue has not played nearly as well as the past few weeks, he sent the Hoosiers easily. Indiana took a 7-0 lead early on, but once Purdue took the lead at 11-9 on a Zach Edey dunk, the Hoosiers never led the rest of the way. At halftime, Purdue’s cushion was comfortable at 29-20. Indiana scored just .67 points per possession in the first half. Despite Purdue transferring it to 28 percent of its holdings, Indiana had just six points off its revenue in the first half.

Indiana are 35-31 in the second half within a three-pointer of Trey Galloway within four, but it did not take Purdue long to regain control. The Hoosiers had a chance to cut it to two (or one with a 3), but a wild effort from Al Durham missed badly at 13:20. Purdue responds with a 3-pointer by Brandon Newman to pull back the lead to seven. Indiana never came closer than five the rest of the time. The loss, Indiana’s fifth consecutive series, ends the regular season for the Hoosiers. Indiana is 12-14, 7-12 overall in Big Ten play and has now lost nine consecutive points against Purdue. Archie Miller, in his fourth season at Bloomington, is 0-7 against the program’s arch-rival.

Outstanding: Al Durham Jr. led Indiana by 14 points, while Trayce Jackson-Davis and Jerome Hunter each bagged 12 points. Rob Phinisee added 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Statistics that stand out: Indiana’s porous three-point shooting of its previous two games continued Saturday at Mackey Arena. The Hoosiers lost 5-out-23 (21.7 percent) in the loss on Saturday and are now 11-out-58 over the last three games of distance (18.9 percent).
