Bungie expands its studio, in part to create non-fatal games

Bungie has begun an expansion of its studio headquarters, with a facility built to focus in part on creating non-Destiny games. The expansion of the country will “increase Bungie’s head office footprint from 84,000 square feet to more than 208,000 square feet”. It is estimated to be completed by the fall of 2022, and is part of Bungie’s ‘commitment to the long-term development of Destiny 2’.

The studio also plans to use the new space to ‘tell new stories in the Destiny Universe and create completely new worlds in IPs yet to be announced.’ In particular, Bungie plans to “launch at least one new IP by 2025.” Back in June 2020, worklists were found indicating that the studio’s new IP would be ‘comic’ and have ‘whimsical characters’. As reported by PCGamesN, Bungie has already filed a trademark for something called ‘Matter’ in 2018, possibly related to this new IP.

Bungie expects to grow rapidly in the future and expand to accommodate new talent and build more games. In 2022, the studio will also open its first international office in Amsterdam for its Publishing and Marketing division.

Apart from games themselves, there seems to be a focus on ‘new media’ and ‘multi-media IP extension’ based on the talent that Bungie is hiring. The studio added Pamela Kaufman to its board of directors, who had previously worked on “licensing and selling ViacomCBS ‘portfolio of brands spanning Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central, BET, CBS, Showtime and Paramount Pictures.” While the expansion of the Destiny universe may involve more games, it may also spread beyond this medium and into others such as TV, film and more.

Bungie’s Destiny 2 recently entered its thirteenth season, the Season of the Chosen. Find out more here about what you can expect from it.
