Tom Brady’s first year in Tampa Bay could not have ended better, and both parties were eager for a contract extension.

Brady, who initially signed a two-year contract last year, has reportedly agreed to a one-year extension.

The Bucs and Brady are now contractually bound by the 2022 season.

While there is no question of financing the expansion, it is likely to lower Brady’s salary cap for 2021, which will help the Buccaneers like their free agents, and then guarantee Brady money in 2022. Brady generally has not yet hard bargains made his NFL career, first with the Patriots and now with the Buccaneers, and it would not be surprising to see him take another step down a year later to lower his 2022 salary cap.

Brady, who turns 44 in August, shows no indication that he plans to retire soon. But this deal makes it a little more likely that when he retires, it will be with the Buccaneers.
