CLEVELAND, Ohio – Think of the conversations we would have today if the Browns were the team that gave up Sam Darnold after making him the best pick in the 2018 draft. Instead, the Jets are the team that beat Darnold no. 3 – the second quarterback in the draft – took and swapped him Monday for a package selected by a second round next year.
Whether it was Darnold, a candidate for the Browns at no. 1, or the Jets who were guilty is something we’ll soon realize, but it’s a sign of the times that it’s another team that set up so quickly from a quarter of an hour to extend Mayfield this off-season. Even if they do not, Mayfield will be the team’s first week for the third consecutive season and will start his 46th consecutive regular season when the Browns open their season – ag, and he has started two playoff games.
You could argue that the Browns should have taken Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson at the top of the draft, but you could also argue that the instability surrounding the franchise would have been disastrous for any quarterback who ended up in ideal situations, just like Mayfield . did, even though it took a few seasons to figure it out.
