A British mother of four has been placed in an induced coma and reportedly had to have her hands amputated after suffering from sepsis due to a bite.
Michelle Ellis, of Plymouth, sustained a small wound when her pooch bit her when she put it in his cage, reports the Plymouth Herald.
After her flu-like symptoms worsened, Ellis was admitted to Derriford Hospital, where she was diagnosed with the potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when the body’s infection response damages tissues.
She was then placed in an induced coma and placed on dialysis according to the outlet valve.
“Her kidneys are still not working and the extent of the damage is currently unclear,” said Ellis’ sister Melanie.
“She is still not aware of the situation with her hands. “They are waiting to see if she is strong enough to absorb it,” she said, adding that her sister had suffered multiple organ damage.
Melanie said it would cost £ 32,000 – about $ 44,000 – for each hand to be replaced with a prosthesis that had to be renewed every five years.
Ellis’ daughter, Keana, 24, said the dog’s bite was “as big as a cigarette fire, so nothing was thought of and she left it – and then it happened.”
The woman’s Facebook page shows her with two dogs, including a pug dog named Mabel, but it was unclear which one bit her. The dog that did bite her had to be killed after the tragic incident.
The family is raising money to raise money for Ellis’ treatment.
“The fundraiser is to help pay for her rehabilitation and all the costs involved, but also just for her to get a little pampered as she gets better,” Keana told the Plymouth Herald.
“Hopefully it will be a nice treat for her, and it will mean that she will not have any extra worries. Hopefully she does not have to worry a bit about money, ‘she added.
Meanwhile, the Ellis family, who had come out of the coma in recent days, could not visit due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“We are not allowed to visit her at the moment, which makes it much more difficult. The most difficult thing is that we did not expect it at all, ”said Keana.
“I now want to raise as much money as we can with fundraising and awareness raising so that she has a good quality of life as she gets better.”
