British hospital replaces the term ‘breast milk’ with ‘human milk’ to be more inclusive

A hospital in the UK announced on Wednesday that it will use language that is more inclusive of transgender and non-binary people in its facilities.

“Our approach is carefully considered as transpersonal and non-binary births without excluding the language of women or motherhood,” Brighton and Sussex Maternity said on Twitter.

The tweet has a 19-page document it has a gender-inclusive language table that staff can use.

In the table, ‘breast milk’ changes to ‘human milk’, ‘breastfeeding’ changes to ‘breastfeeding’ and ‘maternal’ changes to ‘perinatal’.

Other words, including the consent of mother, wife and mother, have been changed to include more transgender and non-binary people.

In a statement, Brighton and Sussex University Hospital have said they are committed to being more inclusive of midwives caring for transgender people giving birth.

‘I look forward to a time when this standard of inclusive care is in fact trading as usual for the whole NHS [National Health Service]. That said, improvement needs to start somewhere, and I am particularly proud of all the hard work we have put into this award-winning work, ”said Amanda Clifton, Chief Obstetrician.
