Joey Bosa is one of the league’s most effective defensive players since the Chargers drafted him in 2016.
Brandon Staley, head coach of the new Chargers, has no plans to change that and says he intends to get Bosa to act on the sidelines and be a game creator. And Staley linked Bosa’s role to the role of a linebacker he coached in Chicago while working under coordinator Vic Fangio.
‘I think the fact that he has a unique physical skill allows you to have the versatility we would like to play with, because he can be on the edge of your defense as an outfielder. And then he can also be a little closer to the ball as a defender in the interior, because he has the length and the strength to be able to anchor as well, ‘Staley said during his press conference on Thursday. ‘So I think he’s a man you can definitely see in a playing position. I think from a composition point of view, he would probably work more like a Khalil Mack, Aldon Smith physique and cast for us, if you think about it. And I think that’s kind of his style of play.
‘But I think Joey’s thing is that he’s a footballer who plays Jesse. He’s going to play well everywhere. But we are definitely going to try to put him in his comfort zone, to get him to do what he does really well, and just can not wait to go work with Joey. ”
Bosa appeared in 12 games in 2020, scoring 7.5 bags, 15 tackles for loss and 27 quarterback hits. If he stays healthy in 2021, he could give Staley a chance to coach the Defensive Player of the Year winners as a coach. Aaron Donald achieves his third honor from the Rams’ top defense that Staley coordinated in 2020.
