There are only 123 games left in the 2020-21 basketball season. Almost half of it will be played on Thursday. The NCAA Tournament Selection Committee began meeting Wednesday to select and sow the field. The finish line is almost here.

Xavier lost 70-69 to Butler in the opening round of the Big East tournament on Wednesday at the bottom of the innings. This is the Musketeers’ sixth loss in their last eight games and their worst loss of the season.

Syracuse beat NC State 89-68 for its third win over the Wolfpack this season. It only slightly improved the resumption of the tournament for the Orange, but with the loss of Xavier, these two changed the place in brackets. In order to do so, Syracuse also had to jump Saint Louis.

The Orange are obviously not safe, but a win Friday against Virginia will help.

Elsewhere in the ACC tournament, Clemson and Louisville each dropped a seed line to Miami and Duke respectively. For Clemson, the loss is the worst of the season, and their first game outside Quad 1. Louisville is now 2-1 up against Duke and must sweat out Selection Sunday.

The AAC, MAC, MEAC and WAC conference tournaments start on Thursday. The top teams of the Big 12 and Big East will also be in action on Thursday, but we have to wait another day for the top seeds in the Big Ten and SEC.

It has been a difficult year for the best seed in the one-bid leagues. Siena lost the seventh team that lost in its conference tournament, and the fifth of those that lost in its first game. The Saints lost 55-52 to Iona, No. 9.
