Boston Red Sox trade: Who are Josh Winckowski, Franchy Cordero, the players acquired for Andrew Benintendi in three-team deal?

The Boston Red Sox traded Andrew Benintendi to the Kansas City Royals and the proceeds include a young fielder, a prospect and three players who will be named later.

It’s a three-team trade involving the Red Sox, Royals and Mets. Boston receives 26-year-old fielder Franchy Cordero and two players who will later be named by the Royals. The 22-year-old pitcher Josh Winckowski and one player are later named from the Mets.

Cordero, a Dominican Republic, beat .236 with a .304 percentage on base, .433 pass percentage, .737 OPS, 12 homers, 12 doubles, four tries, 36 RBIs and eight steals in 95 major league games (315 plate appearance). He will earn $ 800,000 in 2021 and is under team control through the 2023 season.

Cordero appeared in 79 games for the San Diego Padres from 2017 to 19, and then last season 16 games for the Royals after San Diego swapped him with Ronald Bolanos in Kansas City for reliever Tim Hill on July 16th. Fangraphs.com, referring to its sprint speed and exit speed, wrote a column in 2018 about how Cordero was one of the “more exciting young players in the area.”

He definitely has power potential. But he has a very high pass rate and has combined negative eight defensive runs at all three outfield positions during his career. Most of his innings are in midfield and left field.

Winckowski was drafted in 2016 by the Blue Jays from Estero High in Florida. The Jays traded him and two others to the Mets on January 27 for Steven Matz.

The 6-foot-202-pound is 18-17 with a 3.35 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and .251 batting average versus 54 minor league outings, including 50 starts.

He started 2019 at Low-A, starting 6-3 with a 2.32 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and .230 batting average against 13. He then reached promotion to High-A, where he won 4-5 with a 3.19 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and .232 batting average against 11 heats (10 starts).

Baseball America wrote about the fair: ‘Winckowski is a solid throw of the strike who last year did not go to Toronto’s alternative training ground but went to the teaching league, where he neared the end of the camp his fast ball to 96 km / h and in the process of learning a splitter. BA also noted that he could “turn a breakaway ball.”

MLB Pipeline ranked him as the prospect of 26 on Mets and wrote: ‘Winckowski relies heavily on a sinker that averages 93km / h and a move that is a solid pitch. He throws downhill, uses his length to create corners, and although he occasionally arms the ball a little short with an arm action that leaves something to be desired, he gets the job done. The change of right-hander is lower than average, although he did so in 2019 with more consistent action. He is aggressive and competitive and considers his position well. The potential is there for Winckowski to become a fullback or a long reliever in the big leagues. He has a good feeling on the hill and deception in his delivery. Winckowski has performed relatively young where he has played, the past two seasons and he is a player to look at. ”
