Last year, Bose released a few new sets of true wireless earbuds – the QuietComfort Earplugs and Sport Earplugs – both have a soundproof design where the earbuds hide inside your ears, which blocks out a decent amount of ambient sound (the QuietComfort Earplugs also have an active sound suppression). The company announced its new launch on Tuesday Sport Open Earplugs, which, as their name suggests, has an open design without a dot, meaning it sits on top of your ear.
They are now available for $ 200 and will ship on January 21st. Initially, it will only be available in the US, so no international prices are available, but $ 200 is around £ 150 or AU $ 260.
Bose says the earbuds are the first to use OpenAudio technology – not leg conduction – the same technology that Bose uses in its $ 250. Frame sound sunglasses. The Frames sound surprisingly good, though not as good as soundproof earbuds or large headphones. “This unique approach delivers clearer, more consistent sound, without recognizing the vibration of bone conduction,” the company says.
Due to their open design, I suspect the Sport Open Earplugs are slightly missing in the bass section. Like the Frames, they will appeal to runners and motorcyclists who do not want to cover anything for safety reasons. They will probably also appeal to people who just do not like the feeling of having an ear tip pinched in their ear.

They turn around you, but sit on top of it.

The Bose Frames Tempo uses 22mm drivers, while the Sport Open Earplugs have 16mm drivers. You’ll probably get audio leaks at higher volumes, which means people can hear your music when they’re near you. That said, with the Frames, if you keep the sound at a more moderate volume level, the sound leakage is pretty minimal.
The earbuds are IPX4 splash resistant and the battery life is rated up to eight hours at 50% volume. They have a charging bench and a protective carrying case, but it does not appear to be charging in the suitcase, which apparently does not have a battery in it. This is unusual, but makes the case lighter and more compact.

There are two microphones on the right earpiece to make calls. According to Bose, the advanced microphone system is “designed to focus only on your voice and reduce the noise of wind and other noise.” The Frames are actually very good to call, so I would expect it to work well as a headset as well.
Once I get an overview sample, I post a full review of the Sport Open Earplugs and let you know how it sounds and fits.
