Border Patrol agents seize nearly 200 pounds of bologna found in the car near the New Mexico border

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency’s agency confiscated nearly 200 pounds of illegal Mexican bologna, the agency confirmed in a release.

Agents at the Specialist-Agricultural Specialist’s office found 22 rolls of bologna (£ 194) in the truck of a Nissan Rogue in Columbus, NM. They fined the driver, a 49-year-old from Albuquerque, $ 500. Some of the bologna was also found in the driver’s luggage.

Mexican bologna is banned in the U.S. because it could bring foreign animal diseases into the U.S. pork industry, CBP said in the release. The meat was destroyed.

“It’s important for travelers to understand that they must declare all items they are transporting abroad to avoid fines and penalties,” said Tony Hall, director of Columbus Harbor, in the release. “A properly declared prohibited item can be left in port without consequence.”
