Boeing prepares aircraft to fly 100% on sustainable fuel

Boeing has set a goal of enabling all of its aircraft to fly with 100% sustainable air fuels by 2030, the company announced Friday.

Stan Deal, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said that “sustainable aviation fuels are the safest and most measurable solution to reduce carbon emissions in the coming decades.”

“We are committed to working with regulators, engineers and other key stakeholders to ensure that our aircraft, and ultimately in our industry, can fly entirely on sustainable aviation fuels,” Deal said Friday.

Aviation produced 2.4% of all carbon emissions worldwide in 2018, and emissions could triple by 2050, according to the Institute for Environmental and Energy Studies, given the projected growth in air travel.

One of the biggest challenges in the transition to sustainable fuel is that it is more expensive than conventional jet fuel, but the cost can drop with research and development, according to a report by the Department of Energy last year.

Boeing joined the Sustainable Aviation Fuel User Group in 2008, which aims to accelerate the use of sustainable fuels by the airline industry.

Sustainable aviation fuels are currently blended with ordinary jet fuel to create a 50/50 blend, but Boeing says aircraft should fly on 100% sustainable aviation fuels.

“Sustainable aviation fuels have been proven, are used every day and have the most immediate and greatest potential to reduce carbon emissions in the short and long term if we work together as an industry,” Chris Raymond, Boeing’s chief sustainability officer, said on Friday.
