BMW’s M models are excellent by definition, but that does not mean that there is no room for improvement. Therefore, the carmaker will launch an even more powerful variant of the M5 later this year.
Launched on Tuesday, the 2022 M5 CS is a lighter and more muscular version of the high-performance sedan – even with its flexible competition package. It is also a limited version model that will only be available for one year and will only be select markets.

The M5 has no power. The base model features a V8 with dual-turbocharged 4.4 liters that delivers 600 horsepower and a torque of 553 ft. However, the engineers of the market were able to take the mill and squeeze in 27 extra horses (10 more than the M5 competition). While some purists will roll their eyes at the lack of manual gearbox, the acceleration numbers of the car should compensate for its exclusion more. BMW claims that the CS can fire from 0 to 60 km / h in 2.9 seconds, which is 0.2 seconds faster than the M5 Competition and according to CNET Roadshow it is easily the fastest production engine. A top speed of 190 km / h is also not too bad.
But credit for the car’s lightning-fast acceleration time also belongs to the reduced weight. The CS weighs a full £ 230 less than the M5 competition. This is mainly due to new carbon fiber elements, including the hood, front split, rear distributor, rear split and mirror housings, as well as all four seats in the cabin. Engineers also reduce the amount of sound-killing material in the car. With these adjustments, the car was able to shed a few pounds without sacrificing the four-wheel drive system. And if you are worried about the reduced weight that changes the way the car feels, do not be afraid because BMW has adjusted the springs and dampers of the car accordingly.

From the outside, the CS does not look completely different from the M5 or M5 competition, but does have several striking gold bronze accents, including on the kidney grids, badges and forged 20-inch wheels. Inside, you’ll find special CS badges, illuminated M5 logos, Alcantara suede, the company’s latest iDrive 7 infotainment suite, and a digital tailoring that will display even more information than the standard M5.
For the time being, BMW only plans to present the M5 CS as part of the 2022 model year and only in the markets in North America, the United Kingdom, Germany and Russia. This exclusivity, coupled with a laundry list of performance and design upgrades, will not be cheap. The sports sedan will start at $ 142,995 when it goes on sale later this year, which is $ 36,000 more than the standard M5 and nearly $ 30,000 more than the M5 competition.
