BMW unveils first details on M5 CS starting in January 2021

BMW will unveil a new series of versions of its M5 super-sedan next month, and a teaser video posted on its Facebook page on Tuesday contains important information.

The new variant will get an M5 CS, which will place the M5 next to other M cars that received the CS treatment. BMW also offers an M2 CS, and there were CS versions of the previous generation M3 and M4.

Prototypes for the M5 CS have been tested for months and now we have the first details thanks to Markus Flasch, head of the BMW M division. In the teaser video, he confirmed that the M5 CS will have a peak delivery of 635 horsepower, although it is likely to be a benchmark used in Germany and therefore can be reduced to 626 hp when rated in the United States. By comparison, the regular M5 delivers 600 hp and the M5 competition 617 hp.

Flasch also confirmed a weight loss of 70 kilograms (154 pounds) from the M5 competition, with one of the weight-saving measures to add the lightweight carbon fiber bucket seats borrowed from the latest M3 and M4. Flasch also said the car is a strict four-seater.

Other elements confirmed for the M5 CS are forged aluminum wheels and a carbon-ceramic brake package with red-painted brake flaps (as opposed to the traditional blue used on M-cars). The wheels have an exclusive bronze finish that will also be applied to other parts of the car, such as the grille. Another exclusive touch is yellow headlights inspired by motorsport, if only for daytime running lights.

There could be more. CS models tend to have less restrictive electronic babysitters, and there were rumors that a newly developed V-8 might make its debut in this M5 CS. We’ll know soon enough, so keep an eye out.
