Blackhawks at Blue Jackets February 13, 2021 NHL Summary: Score, Stats, Videos, Highlights

The Blackhawks entered the origins of Saturday with the Blue Jackets in search of redemption after squandering the final game by a two-goal lead. This time it was the Blackhawks who played a spoiler, with a few minutes remaining arrangements and again in overtime, with another game goal from Alex Debrincat for a 3-2 victory.

Patrick Laine opened the scoring at 6:39 in the first with a corner-and-down corner. Just a beauty of a shot. The Jackets took first place in 12 of 16 games.

Later in the first half, Brandon Hagel checked Jack Roslovic hard, and Laine inexplicably decided to defend his honor. Hagel and Laine each got five for fights, but the Blackhawks got the power play when Laine got an extra interference penalty.

The first period looked like it would just be a continuation of the last game with the Blue Jackets, but the Blackhawks built momentum after a few powerplays that achieved anything but.

The Blackhawks finished with 14 shots for the Jackets’ 9, but still trailed 1-0 at the end of the season.

That momentum would be transferred into the midfield, and after an extended offensive time for the Blackhawks, Nicolas Beaudin scored his second place in as many games to level it at 1-1.

In a narrow moment Mattias Janmark takes a puck to the head and goes to the locker room with 8:40 left in the second. Fortunately, he will not return the bank long after that.

Cam Atkinson broke the deadlock with 5:13 left in the second period by leading a point from Zach Werenski. It was Atkinson’s sixth point in the last two games against the Blackhawks.

The Blackhawks pushed hard for the second goal and had multiple chances in the dwindling minutes of the period. Dylan Strome may have had the best, but Joonas Korpisalo came up big to keep the Blue Jackets ahead.

Despite the Blackhawks controlling much of the game in the first 40 minutes, they trailed 2-1 in the final period.

The third period would be the opposite of the first two, as the Blue Jackets were trapped by the neutral zone to stifle the Blackhawks.

However, the Falcons are nothing, if not resilient, and they scored the game goal with 3:45 left in the game. Philipp Kurashev made a great play to beat Carl Soderberg, who scored his first goal of the season.

Regulation ended with the fact that the Blackhawks and Jackets were tied at 2 and that they would have to go overtime again.

Fortunately, Debrincat quickly ended the game, scoring just 35 seconds of overtime with beautiful hand-eye coordination. Patrick Kane also picked up his third assist in the game. These two really feel the chemistry.

HAWKS WIN! HAWKS WIN!

Notes

  • It feels almost superfluous at this point, but the Blackhawks kids are really good. The team is led by the vets in Kane and Keith, but the young players are each impressive in their own ways and it’s just a pleasure to watch them.
  • Speaking of impressive, Nicolas Beaudin not only scored his second NHL goal, but his steady play with and without the puck becomes a feature of him. There is a degree of ease that Beaudin displays that is amazing to see since he just turned 21 a few months ago.
  • Hail was quickly a favorite of fans, thanks to his work ethic and relentless pursuit of the puck, and he probably only became more beloved by dropping the gloves against Laine. Hail is a spark plug that Andrew Shaw needs to guide him on how to convert energy into production.
  • Kurashev was also a catalyst for this match. He drew the first penalty of the game – which swung momentum in favor of the Falcons – and picked Werenski’s pocket to help the match goal.
  • DeBrincat and Kane have always worked well together, but it looks like they have taken it to another level this season. They had the puck good in their 128 minutes of ice time, along with a share of 52 percent of the shot attempts and 63 percent of the goals while on the ice. Kane had his seventh multi-point game of the season.
  • There was a lot of discussion about the Blackhawks’ play at 5-on-5, but they were much better in the first 40 minutes tonight. Some of it is due to scoring effects, and they could not get anything going in the third direction – seriously, the Falcons only had 7.95 expected goal percentage for that framework – but you have to be content with the improvements of the previous match.
  • On the other hand, the match could not be scored for the first time in six matches. It still looked dangerous, but the line had to end somewhere.
