A coalition of technology and healthcare organizations, including Oracle, Microsoft and the Mayo Clinic, are reportedly developing a digital COVID-19 vaccination passport that enables businesses, airlines and governments to see if individuals are vaccine received.
The Hill reports that a coalition of health and technology organizations is developing a new digital COVID-19 vaccination passport that can be checked by businesses, airlines and countries to confirm whether an individual has received the vaccine. The coalition includes technology giants such as Microsoft and Oracle, along with the Mayo Clinic.
The vaccination initiative announced on Thursday that it is developing technology to confirm vaccinations in case governments instruct people to provide proof that they have received a vaccination to be able to travel.
The coalition hopes the technology will enable people to “demonstrate their health status to return safely to travel, work, school and life, while protecting their privacy on the data.” The group uses work from the Commons Project’s international digital document that confirms that someone tested negative for COVID-19.
Currently, the Commons Project system, created in partnership with the Rockefeller Foundation, is used by three major airline alliances. The coalition is apparently currently in talks with several governments to draw up a program that requires negative tests or proof of vaccination to enter the country, said Paul Meyer, chief executive of Commons Project.
Meyer said in a release: “The purpose of the vaccination initiative is to empower individuals with digital access to their vaccination records so they can use tools like CommonPass to safely return to travel, work, school and life, while they protect their privacy from data. ”
Mike Sicilia, executive vice president of Oracle’s Global Business Units, said the passport ‘should be as easy as online banking’, saying: ‘We are committed to working with the technology and medical communities, as well as global governments. , to ensure that people will have secure access to this information where and when they need it. ”
