‘Big Sky’ Summary: Season 1, Episode 6

Big skyMerrilee Legarski may want likes to plan a funeral for her husband, Rick … because as we learn at the end of the winter premiere of the series, he is not dead!

As viewers remember, Cassie Dewell shot a bullet in the forehead of Montana’s civil service at the end of the fall finale, just after she found him with the three women he was planning to transport to Canada. And this is where Tuesday’s episode pops up, with Legarski blowing out on the floor of the All In Bar’s basement. He is transported to the hospital, where he has a flat line but is alive again.

Cassie is incredibly shocked at what she did; throughout the episode she (understandably) floats on the brink of a panic attack. When Jenny arrives on the scene while emergency personnel see Jerrie, Grace and Danielle, she is full of hope about Cody. But it is quickly crashed when officers from Sheriff Tubb dig up Cody’s truck, with the body of the dead PI inside. Jenny screams and falls to her knees in sadness as Cassie watches and cries in silence. (Side note: even in her deep loss, this woman’s dedication to a detailed braid is commendable. At one point in the hour, even as she squints her eyes at home, she cradles a braid that will make Elsa jealous. .)

At home, Ronald and his mother are scared. Police are going to search Legarski’s house to try to connect him to the sex trade, and when they find the hidden room where Rick kept all his records, Ronald is roasting. What’s more: thanks to the victims recovered, police know the other kidnapper is a long-distance truck with a specific paint job on his vehicle. So Ronald paints the hood of his truck and makes a mess with the license plate and makes a plan to break into the Legarski house to wipe out anything that connects him to the crime. (There’s still the pretty big part about Grace, Jerrie and Danielle that could identify him, but ONE THING AT A TIME, MOTHER!)

Jenny and her son, Justin, hold a funeral and memorial service for Cody; the reception then includes some hot moments between the widow and Cassie, including when Cassie steps on stage to sing Neil Young’s “Harvest” – Cody’s favorite song – after Jenny can no longer succeed. After that, both women find themselves back in office. “I never thought it would be you who would help me get through this,” Jenny tells her, and the bonding moment asks Cassie to offer Jenny Cody’s place in practice to private investigators. Jenny mocks, but eventually agrees – just until the Legarski case is put to bed.

Elsewhere, Jerrie walks home when a man with a baseball cap calls her name and starts chasing her. It turns out it’s just a man she knows named Jimmy who “wanted to make sure it’s okay with you.” The dynamic between them is a bit unclear – he seems to like her, but she tells him that the days she could talk to him were ‘over’. After all, she seems to like his concern. With her, however, there is a note with the caption “You do not learn” on the door, which goes back to what Ronald often said to his prisoners.

Without everyone in the hospital knowing, Rick pulls his fingers, his heart rate monitor starts beeping faster, and then he opens an eye!

Now it’s your turn. What did you think of the episode? Sounds down in the comments!
