The move is part of a larger effort by the Biden government to clean up President Donald Trump’s political appointments in scientific roles. The EPA recently wiped out the entire Scientific Advisory Board set up by the Trump administration.
Weatherhead is considered a chief scientist and believes that climate change was a real and serious matter.
She is an atmospheric scientist who was set up under the previous administration at the White House Office of Science Technology Policy of the U.S. Geological Survey and will now return to the USGS, the official said.
The move comes as the White House will host a climate summit on Thursday and Friday and announce 2030 emissions targets for the United States.
Weatherhead was appointed by Kelvin Droegemeier in her role at the National Climate Assessment, which served as director of OSTP under Trump.
While Droegemeier Weatherhead, who views climate change as a legal threat, tapped to lead the National Climate Review, other officials brought to the study during the Trump administration held different views.
