Biden says son Hunter’s book “gave me hope”

In an exclusive interview with CBS News, President Joe Biden said he felt ‘my son’s back’ when he started reading his son Hunter’s upcoming book. “The honesty with which he came forward and spoke about the problem. And the hope that it gave me hope to read it,” said Mr. Biden said.

The anchor and managing editor of “CBS Evening News”, Norah O’Donnell, spoke with Mr. Biden talks in the first network news interview he has given since his inauguration. It airs Sunday before 4pm before the Super Bowl.

Hunter Biden, the youngest son of Mr. Biden, has struggled with drug addiction throughout his life. He was discharged from the Navy Reserve in 2014 after failing a drug test, and sought treatment in rehabilitation facilities.

Mr. Biden told O’Donnell that he feels his family’s struggles are related to many Americans.

“You know, I’m betting there’s not a family you know that does not have someone in the family who has had drug or alcohol problems,” he said.

Hunter Biden was a regular target of former President Trump on the campaign. At the first presidential debate, Trump falsely said that Hunter Biden said was dishonorably discharged from the army. Hunter Biden has been administratively fired after testing positive for cocaine.

At the same debate, Mr. Biden admits his son had drug problems.

“He fixed it, he worked on it,” the former vice president said. “I’m proud of him. I’m proud of my son.”

In April, Hunter Biden released a memoir entitled “Beautiful Things” by Gallery Books, a print by Simon & Schuster. Simon & Schuster is a division of ViacomCBS. The book discusses his struggle with drug abuse, as well as his relationship with his family, including his father and deceased brother, Beau Biden.

The full interview will be broadcast on Sunday during the 16-hour ET before the Super Bowl, only on CBS.
