President Biden on Thursday told Congress that he had ended the national emergency across the border between America and Mexico that former President Trump first declared in February 2019.
Why it matters: Trump used the national emergency proclamation to divert billions of dollars in Pentagon funds to the construction of a boundary wall, after it became clear that Congress was opposed to additional funding. The statement spurred dozens of lawsuits and congressional efforts to deter Trump from fulfilling his best 2016 campaign promises.
What they say: “I have determined that the declaration of a national emergency on our southern border was unfounded. I also announced that it will be my government’s policy that no more US taxpayer dollars are diverted to build a border wall, and that “I’m instructed. a careful review of all resources allocated or diverted to it,” Biden wrote in a letter to congressional leaders.
