Now I was not a federal employee. Most of NASA is not. NASA has a big name, but it’s a small agency and most of them are contractors. The federal employees manage the agency’s contractors and programs. The Perseverance Rover is an example of one of the programs, just like Hubble, and its successor, the James Webb Space Telescope that will be launched soon.
The federal employees are the backbone of the mostly private sector agency that puts rockets and people into space and does research on aviation. It is in the name – the national aviation and aerospace administration.
There is nothing about managing children on the border in that name. Not a thing. If one of the federal staff members had been asked to sign me up for border service when I was at Hubble, we would all have heard of it.

But here we are. The administration of Biden irresponsibly threw the border wide open that day. Hundreds of thousands of migrants crossed it illegally. At least 18,000 children are being held in some kind of overcrowded facility. Border towns are overwhelmed. The federal government is so overwhelmed that it now wants to take its staff, pilots and alien astronauts and rocket scientists from their important work in one of the smallest federal agencies to deal with this disaster at the border.
The Biden administration swings. It’s trying to blame Trump now, but the migrants are not wearing MAGA hats. They wear ‘Biden Please Let Us In!’ shirts and tell every reporter that they came because Biden told them.
Trump left Biden a fairly orderly border. The wall mocking Biden and his people was almost complete; Biden inherited kick-ready infrastructure work right there, but he canceled it immediately despite Trump and his supporters. Biden, according to Obama’s quote about his tendency to “f *** up” things, did exactly that.
How do I know? Biden has been appealing to other, larger agencies for several weeks. That was not enough. It was a dud. Who knew a bunch of government fat cats living in million-dollar homes in Bethesda, Md. And live in Northern Virginia, not wanting to leave for the border where it’s dangerous and that they have to think of thousands of children? And, by the way, handle more COVID as well. And hyper-violent drug cartels that make Blackbeard look like a schoolboy. Shocking that they are not getting enough volunteers, right?
This NASA email appears to be an increase from the staff perspective, and from the facility perspective when Biden’s people began considering using a NASA facility to house migrants in March. Wrap your mind around that one. NASA facilities are not designed for that. They are designed for rocket research and actual launches, they are designed to build satellites in clean rooms, they are designed for aerospace or other research, or they are academic and office buildings. What part of it says, “Let’s pick a bunch of migrating kids here”?
NASA people are not designed for this either. They are program staff and managers and physicists at the highest level and the like. These are very smart people who do wonderful things, but great child care in convention centers and tent cities is far from ‘other duties as assigned’. Or even as a volunteer in this case.
According to Victoria Taft’s report in March, they were trying to hire babysitters at a whopping $ 144,000 salary. We also have … it. Egad. Biden does all this. But we escaped the average tweets. This is something.
Biden is now trying to pull NASA people out of space and thriving research – their nuclear mission, and one that is as important as ever with China on the rise – to deal with the border chaos he created out of stupidity and in spite of it. This is not good. Joe Biden (or whoever makes his decisions for him) is an idiot.
