Xavier Becerra, nominated by President Biden as head of the Department of Health and Human Services, declined to name any restriction on abortion that he would support when he testified sternly during the testimony before the senators on Wednesday.
Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., Asked Becerra pointlessly whether he would name an abortion restriction he could support, which the California Attorney General declined to answer.
“Is there a line you would draw?” Vra Daines. “Is there only one, only one restriction related to abortion that you can possibly support?”

Becerra has repeatedly acknowledged that there are many different views on the important issue – and he respects everyone. But when it comes to his specific duties as Attorney General or HHS secretary, it is his job to uphold the law.
“I tried to make sure I kept to the law, because whether it’s a specific restriction and whether it’s the whole idea of abortion, whether we agree or not, we have to come to the conclusion,” Becerra explained. “And this is where the law gives us a place to live.”

Daines noted that he did not get an answer and offered several options of his own, including a ban on the lethal discrimination of babies diagnosed with Down syndrome, or a ban on sex-selective abortion.
“My job is to make sure I follow the law,” Becerra replied.
Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, questioned Becerra on Tuesday about long-term abortions, where he gave similar answers.
The issue became a lightning bolt for Republicans for several reasons, including that Becerra voted against the “Partial Birth Prohibition of Abortions Act” in 2003.
