The administration of Biden is expected to ban on transgender Americans because he served in the military, several people who informed the decision told CBS News. The announcement is expected as early as Monday, one senior defense official and four outside attorneys said to revoke the ban, CBS News said.
The senior defense official told CBS News the recall will take place through executive order signed by President Joe Biden. The announcement is expected to take place during a ceremony with newly-confirmed Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, who will order the Pentagon to return to the policy introduced in 2016 by former Secretary of Defense Ash Carter, which allowed transgender Americans to serve openly.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The new order will instruct the branches of the military to set out an implementation plan.
The former president, Trump, announced the ban via a tweet in July 2017. The ban went into effect in April 2019 and banned transgender Americans from joining the military.
In 2014, it is estimated that there are approximately 15,500 military members of transgender service, according to a study by the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law.
Biden has repeatedly repeated his promise to repeal the ban during the campaign.
Austin said during his Senate confirmation hearing last week that he plans to revoke the ban.
“I support the president’s plan or plan to reverse the ban,” Austin said Tuesday when Senator Kirsten Gillibrand asked him, “I really believe, Senator, that as I said in my inaugural statement, that if you are fit and you ‘if you are qualified to serve and you can maintain the standards, you must be allowed to serve. And you can expect me to support it throughout. ‘
