The director of disease control and prevention centers, Rochelle Walensky, said on Monday that youth sports and other extracurricular activities should be “restricted” amid the coronavirus pandemic, saying outbreaks in young people stem from these activities.
“We learn that many outbreaks of young people are related to youth sports and extracurricular activities,” Walensky said.
“According to CDC guidance, these activities should be restricted,” Walensky continued, adding that “if this is not the case, the risk of bunches with cadence testing strategies can be avoided, as rolled out in so many different places.”
Walensky said that as schools reopen to students and young people participate in their extracurricular activities, it is “even more important” that the public strictly adhere to the CDC leadership.

In December, the CDC issued guidelines for youth sports, saying that each community must make adjustments to meet its own unique circumstances.
The CDC said that ways to evaluate the risk for these activities include community levels of COVID-19, the physical proximity of players. Saying, for example, sports that require contact or closeness can make it more difficult to maintain physical distance, compared to sports where players are not close to each other “- the intensity of the activity and the length of time players are close to each other or staff .

The CDC also said that setting up the sporting event or activity was important, noting that indoor activities pose more risks than outdoor activities, and pointed out the size of the team, the share of equipment and the restriction of travel outside the local community.
The CDC has encouraged local youth sports and activity organizations to clean and disinfect surfaces on the fields, tracks or equipment and other shared objects, enforce mask wear, limit team sizes and exercise physical distance.
