MLB owners are not the only ones who want the season to be pushed back a month. The federal government wants to see that happen too.
According to The Athletic, members of President Biden’s administration recently told owners that they would like the season to be pushed back a month so players can get vaccinated by now.
However, the Players’ Association did not prefer the discussion and did not want to come under pressure. If the COVID-19 outbreak does not occur, the season will start in time after the union rejected MLB’s proposal for a 154-match season that starts late. The union scheduled a later call with government officials without MLB’s involvement.
The government’s expectations were the expected introduction of another vaccine, this one from Johnson & Johnson. The Athletic reported that MLB did not tell the players’ association’s details about the meeting, but did inform team presidents.
It does not seem to matter at this stage. The season, at least for now, is expected to start on time.
