The Biden government is sending the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to the southern border of the US to care for unaccompanied migrant children amid a recent influx.
The Department of Homeland Security said in a press release Saturday that FEMA will support a 90-day effort to receive, shelter and transport underage minors crossing the border.
“I am grateful for the extraordinary talent and response of the FEMA team,” said DHS secretary Alejandro MayorkasAlejandro MayorkasDHS grants temporary legal status to citizens of Myanmar in the US Mayorkas, torpedoing the Biden government’s position on asylum seekers. said in a statement. “Our goal is to ensure that unaccompanied children are transferred to HHS as quickly as possible, in accordance with the legal requirements and in the best interests of the children.”
The effort comes because Biden is dealing with a record number of underage minors crossing the southern border.
CBS News Tuesday reported that more than 3,200 children were trapped in border patrol cells for migrating adults, and nearly half exceeded CBP’s three-day deadline to move into a proper shelter.
The government has said it wants to remove the minor minor from U.S. Customs and Border Protection under the Department of Health and Human Services, and place it with a family member or sponsor until the case is decided.
However, Mayorkas continued to declare that those entering the US would be apprehended and sent back through ‘irregular channels’.
“It is never safe to enter the United States through irregular channels, especially during a pandemic,” Mayorkas said. ‘To effectively protect the health and safety of migrants and our communities from the spread of COVID-19, individuals apprehended at the border are still denied entry and returned. ”
