The Biden government is stepping up its vaccination efforts in light of a number of variants that appear more contagious than the original strain of the coronavirus that is spreading around the world. COVID-19 cases are falling all over the country, but the presence of the variants threatens to make the drop only temporary.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 65 million people have been vaccinated with at least one shot of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine, the only two so far approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Of the people, nearly 20 million received both doses, or about 6 percent of the U.S. population.

The expansion of the distribution of the vaccines by the federal government comes as Moderna and Pfizer said on Tuesday that they would be able to deliver more than 130 million additional doses by the end of March. The two companies already have contracts to supply 600 million doses.
