Biden administration could drastically cut nicotine in cigarettes, reports WSJ

The Biden administration is looking at a regulatory change that could radically change smoking: forcing tobacco companies to reduce the amount of nicotine in cigarettes to such a level that it is no longer addictive, The Wall Street Journal report. Federal-funded research has shown that smokers are more likely to quit low-nicotine-producing cigarettes and switch to nicotine gum or e-cigarettes that do not contain the substances that cause diseases associated with half a million deaths a year in the US. The tobacco industry was unintentional. Altria, which makes Marlboro, warned that the move could lead to a “growth of an illegal market” and would cost jobs. The government in Biden is also considering a possible ban on menthol cigarettes, which according to science are difficult to quit and are popular among younger smokers and black smokers.
