Border officials encountered 172,000 migrants at the border in March, a 71% increase from February and the latest indication of the extent of the crisis at the southern border – but one that Biden officials are trying to blame on the Trump administration.
Of the 172,000 migrants encountered, the majority were single and included 18,890 unaccompanied children – an increase of 100% from the already high numbers found in February, and the highest number. In February, 100,441 migrants were encountered in general.

“CBP has seen an increase in encounters and arrests. This is not new. Encounters have continued to increase since April 2020, and our past experiences have helped us to be better prepared for the challenges we face this year. Acting Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Troy Miller said in a statement. “We are committed to upholding the need to maintain border security, to caring for those in our custody, and to keeping the American people and our workforce safe.”
The government in Biden has embarked on an increase in the number of immigrants in recent months, which has escalated into a major crisis, although officials have described it as a ‘challenge’.
While single adults and family units can be returned via Title 42 Public Health Protection, the administration has not applied it to unaccompanied children. Meanwhile, Mexico refuses to take back family units with children under the age of seven. The result was a reintroduction of the so-called ‘catch-and-release’ policy of releasing some migrants inland, and photos appeared of facilities full of migrating children.

In March, 103,900 individuals were suspended under Title 42, representing 60% of the total encounters.
Republicans have accused the government of fueling the crisis by pursuing Trump-era policies, such as the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), which detained migrants in Mexico for their trials, as well as narrowing domestic enforcement priorities and building to stop the boundary wall.
But the Biden administration has rather blamed the Trump administration,
“We continue to dig out of the hole left by the previous government on immigration,” an administration official said.
Officials blamed the lack of readiness of Health and Human Services, saying the Trump administration had not asked for extra beds until Jan. 15. It also blamed the previous administration for reducing funding for the Northern Triangle and ending asylum problems.
The official said the new government had “made significant progress” since January 20, but warned that “no one expects it to be resolved overnight.” The official also called on Congress to rectify the immigration system.
This reflects criticism of President Biden directed at his predecessor.
“He has all the elements that exist to take apart the problems that have worked and be a problem for a long time to come,” he told a news conference last month. “He actually shut down the number of available beds. He did not fund HHS to get people to get the children out of the Border Patrol facilities where they did not have to stay longer than a few days – a little while. But he broke it all down. ‘
These demands have flattened at Republicans, who pointed to low numbers last year, as well as mechanisms put in place to deal with migratory congestion after the 2019 border crisis that has now been undone.
The March numbers exceeded the highest monthly total during the 2019 crisis, where about 142,000 migrants were encountered in May of the same year. It is likely that the numbers will continue to climb in the spring and early summer months.
