A young bettor who gained notoriety for hitting big matches has pleaded guilty to threats against the players who jeopardize his bet.
Ben Patz, known in the industry as “Parlay Patz,” pleaded guilty on Feb. 15 to “transferring threats in interstate or foreign trade,” but the U.S. Department of Justice announced the deal Wednesday.
Patz, who was arrested on March 5, 2020, faces up to five years in prison for his crime.
The plea of Patz, 24, comes almost a year to the day Patz turned himself into a federal marshal after being accused of threatening athletes and their families through instant messages on Instagram.
The complaint alleges that Patz sent a Pepperdine basketball player to a victory that she would ‘have had her throat cut open with a dull knife’ and that she ‘would have been beheaded and burned whole’ alive.
The complaint also said that Patz allegedly gave $ 10,000 to the Rams to win the Super Bowl, and they lost to the New England Patriots, a direct message to a Patriots player with the initials JE (probably Julian Edelman ) sent that he ‘raped and killed your whole family. Edelman got 10 passes for 141 meters on the way to the MVP of the match.
But the messages that led to Patz being charged took place on July 20, 2019.
That day, the Tampa Bay Rays lost a 2-1 game against the White Sox.
Patz admitted guilt for sending messages to pitcher Emilio Pagan, Adam Kolarek and Chaz Roe, who were responsible for giving up the two runs.
Patz also sent a message to Rays left-back Tommy Pham, who was 0-for-5.
Patz wrote to Pagan that he would kill his family by hacking them up and breaking them alive.
The Rays brought the threats under their local FBI office to their attention and collaborated on the investigation, in which Patz admitted sending the instant messages while the game was still in play.
