In such times, All the president’s men feels almost like a fantasy: here were two steadfast journalists (brilliantly played by Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman) to simply put their heads down and do their job of exposing a conspiracy that reaches the top of the government – and they won it. When newspaper presidents could be overthrown and authority figures held accountable, Alan J. PakulaThe masterful conspiracy drama had a paranoid edge that felt dark for the time the film was released in 1976, but is almost lightweight compared to today.
Batman Beyond
Red warning: Batman Beyond come to HBO Max. All the Batman animation programs and some live-to-video movies are too, but I felt the need to highlight them Batman Beyond because of what a banger this 1999 DC animated show was. With a stylish steampunk-meet-gothic aesthetic and the imagination of a future in which an elderly Bruce Wayne entrusts the Batsuit to a talking teenager, Batman Beyond puts its own stamp on the Batman legacy that felt new, fresh and ultra-cool. Very skway.
Mad Max: Fury Road
What can I say? Mad Max: Fury Road is an action masterpiece. Septuagenarian George Miller showed off all the flashy young action filmmakers who worked on his high-octane 2015 today Mal Max continued, who played the lead role Tom Hardy as the title character and Charlize Theron as one of the greatest action heroines of all time in cinema – making such an impact that a Theron-less prequel is currently in the works. But there’s nothing like looking at a steel-eyed Theron using Hardy’s shoulder to confirm her gun in the perfection of Miller’s action.
Mulholland Drive
Mulholland Drive is David Lynch‘s weird, bizarre love letter to the City of Dreams, which follows Naomi Watts‘Cheerful aspiring actress Betty when she arrives in Los Angeles and forges a close friendship with a beautiful amnesia woman (Laura Elena Harring) named Rita. Noir meets soap in this deceptive dream movie, which is famously started as probably one of the strangest TV pilots ever made.
Pushing Daisies
Bryan FullerThe fantasy comedy series that went too fast has never received the praise it deserves, and has even now been banished a bit to the dark corners of the internet as a forgotten curiosity. But Pushing Daisies is a whimsical delight whose short life makes the two-season series all the sweeter, thanks in part to Fuller’s vivid footage and the gonzo, super charming performances of Lee Pace, Kristen Chenoweth, en Anna Friel.
