Best Buy Launches New $ 200 Membership Program to Fight Amazon

The retailer said Wednesday that it is launching a $ 199.99 annual membership program with free device installations, a technical support concierge service and other benefits. The program, Best Buy Beta, will be available at approximately 60 Best Buy stores in six states by this month. It also includes free delivery without order minimums, extensive return windows and exclusive sales.

Best Buy has adapted to competition from online players like Amazon by improving customer service and positioning itself as the expert in TVs, computers and other electronics. This offer is the latest example of the company’s approach to winning customers, says Michael Baker, a retail analyst at Davidson & Co.

With the new membership, he said, Best buy (BBY) is aimed at customers who “have more appliances and technology in their home but are having trouble understanding it all and need help.”

Best Buy is also looking for ways to add new revenue streams besides product sales. A membership is attractive because it can generate ongoing fees from customers.

Amazon (AMZN) popularized the retail membership model at Prime, which currently costs $ 120 a year, and other retailers followed suit. Walmart (WMT) last year, Walmart + debuted, a $ 98 per year plan that includes free delivery of $ 35 and more items and same-day grocery delivery.

Best Buy currently has another, more limited membership program, Total Tech Support, which launched it in 2018. The new membership program will replace Total Tech Support in the six countries where it will be launched, and Baker expects the previous concept to one day completely replace it. .

“You need to keep making these subscriber offerings more attractive to customers,” Baker said.

Best Buy begins membership after a strong year in the pandemic. The retailer saw an increase in sales of items from laptops to kitchen appliances as more Americans worked and cooked at home. During the last quarter ending January 30, comparative sales, or those in stores that were open for at least one year, increased by 12.6% compared to the previous year.

However, Best Buy expects demand to decline this year. It is estimated that the comparable sales growth will be from 20% to 1% in 2021.
