Is 6-25-1 good enough to get Bengals coach Zac Taylor a third year on the job? Yes it is.

The Bengals have announced that Taylor will return for 2021.

“Our fans wanted a new direction two years ago, and that’s what we wanted to do to appoint a bright, energetic head coach in Zac Taylor,” Bengals owner Mike Brown said in a statement Monday morning. was issued. “We remain strong on the foundation that Zac is building, and we look forward to giving our fans the winning results we all want next year. In the two years of Zac we have added many new entrees and contributors through the concept, we have invested a lot in free agencies and got a talented young quarterback with a bright future.

‘This season we have had challenges with injuries in key positions and missed opportunities. I’m proud of our football team that fights hard through adversity. That adversity and hard work will help us next season. We will enter the off-season to help our weaknesses and magnify the strengths of our talented young core. We are not discouraged, but rather feel motivated and confident that next year will reap the benefits of the work done so far. We must seize the opportunities that lie ahead. Next year we deserve our stripes. ”

The Bengals “acquired a talented young quarterback” because they achieved a 2-14 record in 2019. They doubled their victory in 2020, but fullback Joe Burrow lost on the way to a serious knee injury.

But the Bengals have a habit of not firing coaches with guaranteed salaries on their contracts. It might have saved Taylor, or at least it was a factor.

It will be interesting to see if and to what extent staff changes are made as Taylor stays. Either way, Taylor will be back in charge of the only AFC North team that did not make the playoffs in 2020 for a third season.
